This gravestone is the centerpiece of a large area in the Newman Cemetery marked off, and with a large central shaft in the marked off area.

John was a captain of the Rehoboth Minute Company in 1774. This was the forerunner of the Revolutionary Town Militia. Originally chartered in 1774 by the town of Rehoboth as a town Militia unit, the unit was comprised of mixed Militia and Minutemen.

By 1775 Rehoboth Militia was a force of 210 persons. At that time there were under the command of Capt. John Daggett of Attleboro and Col. Timothy Walker of Rehoboth. On April 9, 1975, ten days before the confrontation between the British and American forces at Concord and Lexington, the unit was sent to Freetown MA. Without a shot being fired, the Rehoboth militia seized 40 stands of British arms, munitions, and accoutrements.

On the Concord and Lexington alarm, April 19th of the same year, the Rehoboth Company was dispatched to the Roxbury and Dorchester area of Boston, where as part of the Massachusetts the troops were absorbed into Washington's Continental forces during the American army's reorganization in 1776 at the Boston camp. Many members of the original unit went on to serve with Gen. George Washington's Continental forces under the Mass. 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 11th, 16th, and 13th Continental Regiments later in the war.

Colonel Thomas Carpenter took over the remaining town Militia in 1776. Under Carpenter, the unit took part in battles such as the battle of White Plains, the Battle of Rhode Island, the battle at Yonkers, NY, and the battle of Long Island.

By the end of the war, John was a Capt. in the American Revolutionary Army

The Rehoboth Minutemen and Militia was an active defense system for the town until April 24, 1840, at which time it was disbanded by General Order.

We question whether it was this John or some other John Bucklin that was credited with Revolutionary Soldier Service in 1776 as a Private in Capt James Hill's Co. Col Carpenter's Regiment. He died on 5 December 1838 at the age of 84 in Fairfield, Herkimer County, New York.71,2633 He was buried about 6 December 1838 in Old Rumford Cemetery, Rehoboth, Massachusetts. John was also known as John Bucklin , Sr.. He has reference number Buck2958. John Bucklin, son of David Bucklin, marched from Rehoboth at the Lexington Alarm, and in 1776 to 1780 turned out with Col. Thomas Carpenter in that regiment.

DAR index, 1990, Part 1, p. 417, shows Ens. RI, same birth date, and wife

During the war, John married Leah Scott. Leah, was an orphan from birth and was raised in the home of Gen. Israel Putnam, because she was a niece of the General's wife. Leah spun her "hope chest" linen from portions of a hogshead of flax owned by Gen. Putnam.

The Watermen Family by Jacobus Waterman VIII, pages 345-346 shows possibly a third daughter born about 1795, may have died young. Girl aged 10-15 shown in 1810 census, but it could be a hired girl. [Richard (Dick) Anderson (source) notes he has not yet seen the 1810 census.

The 1800 census shows two Bucklin families: John, Sr. and Alden. School records for Dec. 1789 - March, 1799 show David, Abigale, Sarah, plus Olsen and Amarille. Unless another Bucklin family was living there in 1799, or they were missed in the 1800 census, they may have been children of John and Leah.

By the 1820 Fairfield census, John was 66, he had deeded his home to John, Jr. who appears as head of household. With him were two boys and a girl under 10, and a young woman, probably a hired girl, aged 16 and 25, and a woman over 45 (Leah) and a man 19-25, probably a hired hand.

According to note [to Richard Anderson] from John Nichols, 707 Franklin Rd., Apt. 2-2, Maretta, GA, dated 1986: The old Bucklin Home was 4 miles from Little Falls, NY on Fairfield Hills, on Mohawk Flats where Little Falls Country Club now stands. The house was square with front and side doors, on a step up. A square front hall with four doors -- Best room upstairs and down-cellar and kitchen. The living room led to Grandma's bedroom, best room, and Grandpa's bedroom with four poster with white canopy, blue hand woven spread, wash stand with glass set in bowl, and secretary. Best room upholstered-battick, horsehair sofa, chairs and mahogany table with high glass-globe lamp. Bed rooms were upstairs, kitchen had large wonderful fireplace. Grandma's bed had trundle for children. A painting of the house was done by Charles V. Wheller, and was in the possession of Helen Nellis (Wheeler) Walker.

One version has John moving in 1783 to NY. He moved with his wife and 3 year old son Alden from Coventry, RI, with an ox-team hauling their furniture and seeds for spring planting. The 'pioneers' (also) planted Palm-of-Gilead trees near the little stream by springs in the wooded hills of their farm. The first winter they lived on parched corn pounded in an iron mortar, milk, and wild game and fish from the stream, as wheat and potatoes must be saved for seed. [Dick Anderson obtained the above material from autobiography of George Wells Bucklin, "recalled by great grand daughter Gurrie (Carrie) Nellis Smith".] Other versions have him arriving at other years. It seems that it must have been before 1790, because John and Leah show up then.

1790 census notes show John and Leah in Herkimer died 5/12/1838/39 or 12/5/1838/39.

Richard Anderson notes: he (in 1787) and brother William (in 1790) and families moved from RI to Fairfield area, Herkimer, NY, their parents following sometime later. Source X13: "probable third daughter, b. 1795, died rather young." Source X3: 1790 census shows wife, two sons and two daughters. Source X9: 1792 he and Joshua Remington bought 670 acres , 1/3 of the Great Lot #8.
