Gerry, Chautauqua Co., NY was once (early 1800's) known as Bucklin's Corners, and was populated by Bucklins (James and son Willard, among
others) that moved from Windham Co., VT. See following source:
history.rays-place.com/ny/chau-gerry.htm Until 1815 the area was an unbroken wilderness up to1815, when several families, all from Vermont, came to start new lives. "Vermont" and "Bucklin's Corners" were the first names attached to the area. The first recognition of the name Vermont to this locality we find in the town records of 1818: "A survey of a road beginning at a pine stump near James Bucklin's house, said stump standing in the highway now designated by the name of Vermont."
However, 1820 James Bucklin opened a hotel which caused the place to be known as "Bucklin's Corners." Bucklin's were early prominent in the Bucklin's Corners area. The first town meeting, in 1830, included the election of Willard Bucklin as one of the two commissioners of highways, and James Bucklin, Jr., as one of the three overseers of poor. James Champlin Bucklin79 was born on 26 July 1801 in Pawtucket, North Providence, Rhode Island.79,2384 In 1815 he was an apprentice to John Holden Greene, an architect. About 1825 he was a Partnership with William Tallman, a builder in Providence, Rhode Island. He was buried in Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island.55,79 James father died on 06 Dec 1802, when James was only about 18 months old. He was taken to Providence by his widowed mother, and there he received a good education. At the age of fourteen years he was apprenticed to Mr. John H. Greene, an architect and builder of that city. With a natural taste for this kind of work, and fond of study, he purchased with the first money he earned after completing his apprenticeship, a book on architecture and he soon advanced in the profession. He eventually gave his attention almost entirely to this branch of contracting and building, though the latter business engaged his attention in his early years. At the age of twenty-one years he commenced that business in partnership with Mr. William Tallman, the style of the firm being Tallman & Bucklin, a firm that was for many years one of the most prominent and successful among the builders and dealers in lumber in Providence.

His partner, William Tallman, must have considered James a good partner, for Tallman named his son born 05 Apr 1825-- James Bucklin TALLMAN (1825-1894).

In his early life James C. Bucklin took considerable interest and was very active in military affairs: and served a period as first lieutenant in the First Light Infantry of Rhode Island.

For perhaps the last twenty-five years of his active business life, Mr. Bucklin gave his attention to architecture, and designed many of the finest buildings of his day in Providence, among them the Arcade, the Westminster Congregational Church edifice, the Butler Hospital for the Insane, the Hoppin homestead, Music Hall, Howard Block and the Reynolds Building.

The Arcade was built for Cyrus Butler by the contracting firm of Tallman and Bucklin. Co-designers James C. Bucklin and Russell Warren modeled their creation in the Greek Revival style. Bucklin designed the facade on Westminster Street and Warren the Weybosset Street facade. See the splendid photos and write ups in the May, 1981 issues of the Architectural Record the article by Robert Alexander, The Arcade in Providence, Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Oct, 1953. In the year 2000, the Arcade still stands, and is pointed out as the first indoor shopping mall in America. When the Arcade was built in 1828, its 22 foot granite columns that support its entrances were the largest in the country. The Metropolitan Museum of Art has called it one of the finest examples of 19th century commercial architecture in the nation. Both as a building project and an architectural project of James Bucklin, it is impressive.

Another of his buildings, at 68 Waterman Street, is now known (2000 AD) as the Cabinet Building of Brown University. When it was first erected it was designed for, and used by, the Rhode Island Historical Society as its first headquarters building designed specially for it.

He was the architect of some 300 mill structures and many fine residences as well as business buildings in various other parts of the country.

James was one of the original members of the Squantum Club of Providence, a prominent social club of the day.
