Charles and Amanda were very close in age and they worked and played together. They did chores together, hoeing the garden, etc. They played all kinds of games together, i.e., running to the railroad track to see the train go by. The people ~would wave at them. Sometimes they put spikes on the track and they would be flattened out.
They would go up to the gate by the railroad track, which wasn't level and would swing. They were scolded about that. Sometimes the railroad company would tell their Dad they shouldn't do that.

There were rattlesnakes along the fences - before we moved on the place (farm) and lived there. We killed the snakes. There were some "nicer" snakes - not poisonous snakes.

Charles and Berdine were born in Indian Territory. They were born at home with a midwife delivering them - named Gramma Pemlocke (?). Amanda didn't think they paid the midwife any money - maybe gave her a chicken or vegetables or some )other gift.

They went to school in a one-room school house, which was a mile and 3/4 from their home. When he went to high school, Charles lived in the Hotel in Carmen. Charles was the only one amongst his brothers and sisters, to graduate from college. He met Bernice at college. Both were teachers. Charles was a principal. Later he quit teaching and farmed. Bernice was left farms and money by Grampa Gregory (her dad) Leonard built a new house for them, near Alva. Charles was a politician and ran rain for state office. Didn't win.

He and Berdine were baptized together in Spring Creek. Charles and Bernice were
always in love. Charles liked to tell jokes and play jokes on people. So did Ray and Neal, who were ornery in a "fun" way.

Chares was always nice to Father and Mother Lee. If Charles and Berdine were on dates together, he always watched out for Berdine.

Charles was a good swimmer - was able to do wonderful swan dives - really beautiful. He also was a tumbler.

The Lees came in a covered wagon to Benton, KS. There was one big prairie - started out with small plots.

Her sister, Lavina Leeper, later Lavina Hartman, moved to Menominee, Michigan, sometime after that latter date. The Keziah, George and Jonathan referred to in the poem probably were Rebecca's brothers who had come with Rebecca and her father to Minnesota.
