Julia Unknown was born UNKNOWN. She died UNKNOWN. She has reference number Buck1071. Reputed to be last living Bucklin at the North American Phalanx. She gave a painting of W. S. Bucklin titled Rivelet at Robinswood to George Wells Bucklin. At that time George and Abby (Cragun) were living with their daughter Clarissa Naomi (Bucklin) Smith at Broomall, PA.

North American Phalanx, a communal society developed according to the principals of Charles Fourier. Charles Fourier, a Frenchman, had devised a complex system that he believed could be implemented in communal societies. In accordance with his plan, a number of these proposed communities or phlanaxes were to be set up in America. The North American Phalanx, established in September, 1843, was the chief testing ground for Fourierism in this country. There were at the beginning fewer than eighty members with a total capital of $8000. Horace Greeley was among those who helped to prepare for the experiment and often visited afterward. The community was located near Red Bank, Monmouth County, New Jersey. It survived for twelve years. The residents built a three-story building as living quarters, a large grist mill and other mills, and workshops. There were seventy acres of orchard. Other crops included wheat, potatoes, tomatoes, melons, and a variety of vegetables. They obtained abundant yields of excellent quality. It is a mark of their efficiency and enthusiasm that their fields were in better condition than those of the neighboring farmers. Within nine years the value of the property had risen to $80,000 (Holloway 148-149).

Toward the end of the ninth year, the community was weakened by the withdrawal of a number of members and stockholders on religious grounds. In addition, an 1854 fire destroyed their mills and workshops. The remaining members had not the heart to go on.

Depending on the date of the source, the Phalanx is said to have been was located either in Red Bank, NJ; or Atlantic Twp.,NJ; or Colts Neck, NJ. The Phalanx is on the way to Red Bank, but not really that close. Atlantic Township was formed from part of Shrewsbury in 1847. It became Colts Neck around 1962. The Phalanx was actually located near the present (2003) Lincroft/Colts Neck border.

At various times, Charles Sears served as director, secretary or president of the Phalanx. He was also the resident chronicler, a leading intellectual influence, chief of its practical operations, and author of a detailed history of the first nine years of the Phalanx.

When dissolution of the Phalanx occurred in 1856, he remained on the land, together with his brother-in-law, John Bucklin (1807-1896), the agricultural chief of the Phalanx. Bucklin continued a cannery operation there until his death, and his descendants retained ownership of a portion of the property which included the phalanstery until 1944. Other former members, including John B. Angell and Thomas Guest, also purchased a portion of the property when the community was disbanded.

The physical facilities of the Phalanx initially included two original farmhouses. A three-story building was soon constructed which connected the three structures. The new addition served as a dormitory-apartment complex and social area. The farmhouses were converted into a dining room and kitchen. This facility served the associates, as they were known, until 1847 when the three-story was constructed.

Facilities on the property included a stream mill, stables, cow and wagon sheds, forges, carpenter shops, a packing house, a school, a day nursery for working mothers, guest cottages, landscaped gardens and paths, and an artificial pond for bathing, boating and ice harvesting in the winter. In comparison to the rest of the country at the time, the standard of living at the Phalanx was very high, and was consistent with association theory.
