The funeral services of Mrs. Laura Bowling, wife of Benjamin S. Bowling, were conducted at the Universalist Church on Sunday afternoon, the 4th inst., by the Rev. Mr. Fall. Mrs. B. died at her residence in Marcellus on Friday, the 2d inst, of diphtheria. Her remains were brought here for internment, and although the day was cold and stormy, the house was filled with friends and relatives among whom the deceased had spent the most of her life. Leonard was the vocalist with accompanist Lilah Nordland (later his wife) on the first official broadcast of radio station WDGY in Minneapolis, MN, on 13 Jan 1924, when it went on the air from the porch of Dr. George Young's home in Minneapolis. After graduating from law school, in 1958 Leonard was a member of the law firm of Larson, Loevinger, Lindquist, Freeman, & Fraser. There were only eight attorneys, and Leonard entered the firm with a law school classmate, Fritz Mondale, who later became vice president of the United States. (Larson became a federal judge, Loevinger became a member of the Federal Communications Commission, Freeman was governor of the state of Minnesota and a United States Secretary of Agriculture, and Fraser was a United States Congressman and later a mayor of Minneapolis.) In 1960 Leonard moved to Bismarck, ND, where he became senior partner in the firm of Zuger & Bucklin, president of Bucklin Trial Lawyers p.c., and "of counsel" to the firm of Bucklin and Klemin.

Leonard was active in trial procedures improvement, and was for almost 20 years a member of the North Dakota Procedures Committee, appointed by the North Dakota Supreme Court. Leonard was a writer of some legal articles and was author of the principal book on North Dakota civil trial procedure used in those years in North Dakota.

Leonard was an excellent trial lawyer. He was elected to the International Academy of Trial Lawyers in 1972, and served on several committees and the Board of Directors. Membership in the Academy is limited to 500 of the leading trial lawyers in the United States, plus selected trial lawyers in other countries. Membership is regarded as a mark of professionally recognized ability as a trial lawyer.

Leonard lost the function of both his kidneys slowly over a period of about 20 years, for causes that were undetermined. His sister Gail Bucklin Shank, donated one of her kidneys in a live donor operation at the University of Minnesota Hospitals in 1984. The donated kidney returned Leonard to good health. For several years thereafter Leonard was active in the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS), where he served on the national committees for ethics and patient affairs. In 1999 he was elected by the members of UNOS to be a general patient representative to the National Board of Directors of UNOS.

In 1992, at age 60, Leonard moved to Corpus Christi as "of counsel" to the Allison and Huerta law firm, which was well known as civil trial litigators. . The Allison and Huerta firm split up in 1997, and Leonard practiced law as a solo practitioner for a year, before retiring, at age 65, in 1998.

After retiring, Leonard and Charla moved to Tempe, AZ.
