He moved to in Michigan 575 He was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Rockford, Wright, Minnesota, United States.576 Records and statements made by his grand daughter Marie to the Joseph Bucklin Society state the facts in the following six paragraphs.
Albigence was called "Alby". This is the person Leonard Alby Bucklin was named for. Albigence was raised by his older brothers Mahlon and William Pitt, after their parents died. When Alby was 14 years old, he and his brother Brayton ran away from the home of their older brother Mahlon. He ran away with Brayton to LaGrange, Indiana. This information is from a written record made by Albigence's son George.
Albigence probably was born in Michigan because that is where brother Mahlon and William Pitt lived most of their lives, and where it is reported their father died. However, Alby's father (Albigence) who was born in New York, moved westward several times, going to Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Michigan.
Albigence (Alby) married Rebecca [Dyer] Leeper in Indiana about 1852, then moved with Rebecca to Hastings, MN, in 1855; where Rebecca died. Alby then married Marrietta Catherine Standish Crawford after her husband died.
From Hastings, Alby moved to homestead at Rockford MN, which was the place where he died.
A year after the birth of the first son the family started out for the Minnesota Territory in covered wagons. Rebecca was seven months pregnant at the time, and they arrived in Hastings, MN, in time for the birth of the son Charles.
Hastings, MN, had a group of Bucklins, known locally as the Bucklin colony. It included members of the Dyer family. The Bucklin colony men worked together. Some of them left their families in Hastings in 1855 and headed for the area of the Big Rock Ford on the Crow River, where they understood there were good timber claims to be claimed. They went to Lake Harriet (now within Minneapolis) and took Brissett's road to the Big Rock Ford: called that because of a huge granite rock in the river. This was later the boundary between Hennepin and Wright Counties and was the reason for the name of the city of Rockford, MN. The claim of Alby and other Bucklins was about 4 miles from the ford in the river.
The claim referred to above is the place which his son George Brayton Bucklin used for the small model of a log cabin which was used under the Christmas tree in the home of Leonard Alby Bucklin.
A picture of Albigence, drawn in charcoal, has been preserved within the Bucklin family line. The tradition is that Rebecca died as a result of a Indian uprising and that then Albigence was mindful that he had no picture of Rebecca for him and the children to remember her. He hired an artist to draw the picture of himself, so that the children would at least have the picture of him, as a remembrance.
Rebecca wrote an interesting poem about the location of her family, about 1859. The poem is kept in the Bucklin Society documentary depository.
After Rebecca died, Alby married Marietta Catherine Standish Crawford, after her husband, Oshea Crawford, died
A poem by his wife Rebecca (see materials on her) mentions Alby making a homestead claim on the North Fork of the Crow. The The Crow River, North Fork flows southeast from Lake Koronis for about 125 miles until it joins the Mississippi River at Dayton. The river deepens and widens as it nears the Mississippi, meandering in a floodplain that is sometimes more than a mile wide. The North and South forks join near Rockford. The Berning Mill Dam The North Fork was once flanked by the "big woods," a thick forest of maple, basswood, elm and other hardwoods. The early settlers found plenty of timber but little land naturally cleared (as was the case in southern Minnesota Hastings area, which had prarie and little timber). The Crow River was named by the Ojibwe Indians for the bird they called the "marauder of newly planted corn." Considered a sacred hunting ground by the Indians, the forest later attracted white trappers. Today there is still abundant fish and wildlife in the river corridor. The North Fork first experienced white settlement in 1851, with people building their homes near the site of Dayton. Several lumber mills operated along the river as the forest was cleared for agriculture. Steamboats were the only means of hauling passengers and freight during the early 1850's. Paddle-wheel boats brought provisions from St. Anthony Falls to Dayton where the goods were transferred to rowboats and carried up the river. Rowboats regularly ran supplies from Dayton to Rockford for about two years. In May 1851, when the river was high, the steamboat, "Governor Ramsey" paddled to Rockford, farther upstream than any other steamboats had traveled.
It helps us understand the times in which Alby and his wife Rebecca (died 1860) lived to know the history of Indian affairs of the time. In 1852, the area from the Crow River on the south to the Clearwater River on the north was proposed as a reservation for the Winnebago Indians and they moved in there, only to be told the federal government had changed its mind. Meanwhile, in southern Minnesota, the Sioux were being moved about by the federal government. It was in August 1862, that the Sioux Uprising began. It ended by Christmas, 1862 with 500 whites killed, 2000 Sioux under guard and 38 hanged at one time in Mankato, and all Sioux treaties abrogated and the Sioux moved out of Minnesota.
When you read of Alby settling in Dakota County, keep in mind that for the Minnesota Territory of 1841 to 1851, the County of Dakota was 100 miles north to south and reached from the Mississippi River on the east to the Missouri River on the west. The first settlers in Dayton, on the bank of the Mississippi, were in 1851. The first settler inland from the Mississippi in the area was in 1855. The original settlers were mostly French, who had come down from Canada.

Alden Bucklin Sr.60,115,215,510 was born on 28 February 1780 in Coventry, Kent County, Rhode Island.58,60,511 He lived in Fairfield, Herkimer County, New York in 1790.596 He was elected as elected first supervisor of Philadelphia. on 5 March 1822 in Philadelphia, Jefferson, New York, United States.597 Alden had his estate probated in 1838 in of father John Bucklin in New York.598 He appeared in the census in 1860 in Fairfield, Herkimer, New York, United States.165 He died on 10 March 1873 at the age of 93 in Stow, Summit, Ohio, United States.599 Alden died on 10 March 1873 at the age of 93 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.56 He died on 1 March 1875 at the age of 95 in Illinois.215,600 He has reference number Buck68. Leonard Bucklin note: I do not think Alden died in the state of Ohio. When he was 84 he was still living in Herkimer County, where he had lived almost all of his life. There is a Town (think like a subdivision of a county) named "Ohio" (and one named Florida, and one named Norway and one named Russia et cetera ad infinitim) in the county of Herkimer, NY. There may well be a burial in the Town of Ohio, and people have gotten an Alden Bucklin of the state of Ohio confused with this Alden.
Phildelphia, Herkimer County, NY was generally a Quaker settlement.
Note by his grandson says that Alden and his brother John settled at a Quaker settlement at Philadelphia, NY, but inconsistently the same note says Alden was in the Militia in 1812.
[STE10110.GED] "Jefferson County History, New York", Emerson, 1898, p 755
It is probable that Alden and Mercy divoreced. Alden married his brother John Bucklin's widow, and later Mercy is still found in census records. [Anderson0208.FTW]
Some records show he had 9 children, plus 4 by second wife. One source shows an Olsen Bucklin, who may have been a son, but may have died young as not shown in 1800 census.
Paul Anderson's note: info. on leaving Mercy for John's wife confusing - other records show second wife with different name... recheck to make sure reference is correct.
1800 Census shows Fairfield, with wife under 25 and daughter.
His father's will left his house in Philadelphia to him (one source showed Pamelia). 1820 census shows him in LaRay, Jefferson County, NY with wife and 7 children.
Supervisor and assessor in 1822 in Philadelphia, Jefferson Co per Phillis Smith 7/97 . Jefferson Co, NY web page shows him listed as "early settler" ; He and brother, David W. Cole shown as Head of households prior to 1850.
(Anderson notes that Ira Cole's (#91) grandson was living in LaRay when executor of Ira's will in late 1980's
(see Anderson source files). Mercy: Source 11: married at Little Falls, probably her home, they lived for awhile in Fairfield (1800 census= wife under 25 and young daughter). 1820 shows 7 children "presumable (she) died a few years later". Her husband Alden married his brother John's widow in 1828... Father was Youngs Ketchum, Barnes Corners, where she was married, is about 15 miles from Fowler, where some of her children were born Philinda: was widow of Alden's brother John. Alden left his wife Mercy according to family records and married Philinda (see note #886) others that Mercy died. Source X11: "m. probably 1813 when she was 19, and John was 22 (b.1794?...) Source X12: when John died/Alden arrives, she has 6 kids and John Sr. age 74 Source X14: she was 71 in 1864, i.e. 91 when she died... Note: she would have been 41 when Benjamin was born.
Anderson spent many years on family genealogy, but mistakenly showed Alden as son of David and Abigail, but other records confirm Alden was grandson. Alden's parents were John and Leah. His autobiography was printed in Dayton OH in 1948 (some excerpts, by Clarice Van Horn in #8's files dated 1982)
A letter from Alden's niece Caroline August Waterman (daughter of Sarah Bucklin) written at Newport,NY 9/19/1864 to her husband, detailed a trip by horse and carriage from the railroad at Little Falls, NY to the house of her uncle Alden Bucklin says: " Had an opportunity to go up to Unlce Alden's where we arrived just before dark, having lcimbed the worst hills and the longest road that aI ever did in my life." [alden was 84 and Philinda was 71]
