More on the story: In 1833 James McGee Bucklin gave his final report on the project to build a canal from Lake Michigan to Peru, IL. He reported a projected cost of about $4,000,000 to build the canal according to the cheapest way, and a cost of only about $1,000,000 to build a railroad to do the same thing. The canal project was then at first abandoned. But Illinois politics took over and the canal project was started as a state project, with magnificent speeches and a new engineer. The size and the cost of the project rose rapidly. It was intended that the state of Illinois would have a grander canal than the Erie canal. The cost grew so much that the project was scaled back to the original Bucklin plans. But the problems of financing actually broke the state banks of Illinois and the bond credit of the state.
