Joseph Bucklin Sr. was born on 23 June 1633 in ENGLAND.337,2738 There is a tax record involving him on 18 November 1670: Listed as paying in Rehoboth He contributed for King Phillip's War in 1676 .2739 He was appointed Administrator of father's estate in November 16842740,2741 In 1688, Joseph obtained land, in division of North Purchase area . He is on a list of inhabitants of Rehoboth belonging to Mr. Greenwood's church on 17 October 1711 in Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts.2742 In 1716, he obtained land, 400 acres north of Providence, RI .2743 Joseph died on 26 March 1718 at the age of 84 in Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts Bay, British America.2744,2745 alt death 28 March 1718 He was buried on 28 March 1718 in Newman Cemetery, Providence Plantations, Rhode Island, British America.2746 He has reference number Buck99. , Joseph obtained land, in Attleboro, Bristol County, Massachusetts.2747 He was also known as Buklin.2747 Joseph's father William Bucklin lived to at least the age of 79; Joseph 1st was 84 years old at his death; his son Joseph 2d lived 66 years; his son Joseph 3rd lived 80 years, his son Joseph 4th lived 70 years; and Joseph 3rd's brother David lived 94 years. These were remarkable lengths of life for those times, and suggest that the Bucklin line was both of a hardy constitution and also of sufficient wealth to keep good health.

By marrying Debora Allen, Joseph 1st started the Bucklin gene pool off strongly, for Debora parents both lived more than 84 years.

From a document executed by Joseph in regards to his father's estate, it is evident that Joseph was a farmer. It appears that his homestead was in that part of Rehoboth that later became part of Pawtucket, RI.

On June 1658, Joseph received one share of 50 acres in the Rehoboth North Purchase. (The town of Attleboro was formed from the Rehoboth North Purchase in 1694.)

In 1670, Joseph was chosen to serve on a grand jury.

On 5 Feb 1671, Joseph drew lot # 63 in another drawing of lots of land.

In 1688, he again participated in a division of land of the Rehoboth North Purchase.

Joseph and his brother Benjamin both married women from the Allen family.

Joseph, Benjamin and their father participated in the drawing of lots for the division of the land in the North Purchase; and John Allen Senior and Junior also participated in that division of land.

Bristol County, MA, probate records show that Joseph was many times called upon to help settle the estates of other people.

The graves of Joseph and also of Lt. Peter Hunt, with whom Wm. Bucklin did carpenter work on the church, are in the south part of Pawtucket (now Rumford) RI. The church, known as Newman Church, is across the junction of highways from the cemetery of the burials of many Bucklins.

In 1659, Joseph announced his plans to marry Deborah Allen. With this,Joseph's father, William Bucklin, deeded the northern third of his 600 acres to Joseph. William formally contracted with the Allen family to "build the said Joseph a Convenient house for his Comfortable living with three score Acres of land ajoyning to it". [Mayflower Descendant, XVI, 82] . The house was built at approximately what in 1999 is the location of Royal Square at the intersection of Central Avenue, Cottage Street and Sabin Street of Pawtucket, Rhode Island.

In 1664, William deeded the central third of his 600 acres to his other son, Benjamin. Benjamin built his house at what in 1999 is known as the corner of Walcott Street and the junction of North and South Bend streets.

After the granting of the two thirds of his land to his son's, Willliam's will provided that upon his and his wife's death, William's own southern third was to be equally divided between the two sons. However, Benjamin was killed in the Nine Men's Misery of 1676. Thus, when William Bucklin died in 1683 and his wife in 1687 -- William's third of his original 600 acres was inherited totally by his only living son, Joseph. Thus at the death of William, both the northern third and southern third of William's 600 acres belonged to Joseph.

The Bucklin 600 acres ran for about two miles of river front, from about the Pawtucket Falls on the North to a large point known as Bucklin Island on the South. This was a considerable amount of land and visable to travelers. "The Bucklins were, from early times, noted for being great land-owners, from Bucklin Island downward [sic]." History of the State of Rhode Island (1875).

With his brother in law Hugh Cole, he is found many times in the Bristol County, Mass., probate records, as assisting in the settlement of someone else's estate.

Many probate records mention him as a yeoman of Rehoboth.

His date of marriage to Mehitable Sabin is also given as 30 Jul 1691.

His will shows him as a Yeoman, and mentions that he had lands in Rehoboth, Attleboro, and Pawtucket Falls. His wife Mehitable was the executrix.

Joseph's marriage to a member of the Jenks family is significant. The Jencks family owned many of the industries in Rhode Island. Joseph's father in law (William Jenks) was a member of the state Assembly. The Jencks empire started with Joseph Jencks, Jr., who is usually credited with being the first permanent settler at Pawtucket Falls, where he started a mill, a forge, and business to manufacture tools. After this marriage of the Bucklin and Jencks families, the Bucklins often operated mills.

In 1732 Joseph purchased 248 acres of land in Washington, Coventry, RI. The land was on a river. Joseph immediately built a grist mill and machine shop, and later had a shop where he manufactured linen and wool goods.

Note Joseph's position as the first deacon of the Baptist Church of his town. Many of the early Bucklins were Baptists.

At the time of the American Revolution, the main Jencks family had the mill on the West side of the Pawtucket Falls, while James Bucklin, grandson of Joseph Bucklin, 2nd, had his grist mill on the East side of the falls, and Joseph Bucklin 3rd, married to Susanna Jencks, had his grist mill and machine shops in Washington, west of Providence. "Be it remembered that Capt. Aged 70 years, 10 months and one day."

This was an entry in the diary of a contemporary, and perhaps indicates the respect due Joseph for his accomplishments.

A "Joseph Bucklin" fired the shot in the capture and burning of the English Navy ship Gaspee. We believe that Joseph Bucklin 5th, the son of this Joseph Bucklin 4th's, was the "Joseph Bucklin who fired the shot which hit the British ship captain in what sometimes is said by historians to have been the first deliberate military engagement of the Revolution. The Bucklins obviously had reasons for hoping that the American Revolution did not end in failure with the instigators of the Revolution being hanged as traitors.

Providence of this period had a flourishing maritime trade, a merchant aristocracy, a few industries, a body of skilled artisans, a newspaper, a stagecoach line, and several public buildings. Fortunes of many of the merchants and ship owners had been built on the shipping of tea and sugar and molasses, rum, and slaves, as well as whaling. Tea, sugar, sugar, molasses and rum were examples of items which the English tried to tax and the Providence merchants preferred to import without paying the tax.

The Rhode Island Assembly records of 1777 show that they paid more than 40 pounds for Joseph to make a trip to Baltimore. The amount is substantial, and unusual. Payments to others for going to other colonies on business of Rhode Island were usually less than 10 pounds, and states on what business they were engaged for the colony of Rhode Island. The amount paid to Joseph is recorded simply as:

section 233 map 3774 Joseph has reference number Buck2617. Wealthy person

Pawtucket merchant. Has many account books and pieces of correspondence at the Rhode Island Historical Society manuscript reading room at MSS 64.

His merchant business was financially sound if the cash book is any indication. For example: "Returns of Brig Sacramento 1st voyage made up April 29, 1857....[net] $5,544.44.....May 5th 1857, Sold interest in Brig Sacramento and cargo 2nd voayage to R. Greene for his note for $6000 interest payable from May 22, 1857"

Joseph in 1806, with B & W Jenks started the Springfield Mfg. Co, in Jesksville, Ludlow, Hampden County, MA, for the manufacture of cotton and wollen goods. The company "failed in July 1848 by a large amount". . Bishop, John Leander, A History of American Manufacturers from 1608 - 1860 Philadelphia,E. Young & Co. 1866. p 209, "annals of the industry of the United States in machinery, manufactures and useful arts".

His letters include one from Joseph to his sister Amme on January 6th, 1813, when he is in Boston, saying in part "I want you to mention to Mother I think of taking Minerva B to live with me so long as she is a good girl and I am in circumstances to do my duty. It is quite time she had some learning. I wish you both to talk with Mary if she is entirely willling". I suppose that this reference to Mary is a reference to his wife Mary (rather than his sister Mary), and suggests that Minerva was realtively young, and that Joseph's father had already died.

Joseph Bucklin, "Papers of Joseph Bucklin, Pawtucket merchant," Correspondence from school at Smithfield to Jospeh Bucklin in Dec 1807 indicates his son John would be coming from Smithfield school to Pawtucket [Apparently for a Christmas school vacation]..

***19 Aug 2020- I believe that John is his brother not his son for the following reasons: 1. John Cumberland Bucklin died in 1795. 2. Joseph did not marry Mary Slater until 1816. 3.
