In fact, Mr. Bucklen served as a model for the features of the famous replica of the lumberjacks' legendary hero.
He was a member of the special tax commission appointed by Gov. Edward Thye and assisted in getting special tax concessions for northern Minnesota schools and welfare.
As an active Civic and Commerce Assn. worker, he played a prominent role in obtaining Bemidji's airport. Working on the charter commission, he assisted in securing the present city manager plan of city government. He was a life-long Republican and an active member of that party's county, district and state councils. For many years he served on the Itasca State Park advisory board and was an active Rotarian as well as serving on the board of the Salvation Army and the Bemidji Savings and Loan Assn.
Mr. Bucklen was a member of the original fish fry crew which has publicized Bemidji in many states and Canada. Fraternal affiliations included the Bemidji Lodge No. 233, A.F. & A.M., Bemidji Chapter No. 70, R.A.M., Elkannah Commandery, No. 30, K.T., Aad Temple, Shriners, Duluth, and B.P.O. Elks. He was past associate guardian of International Order of Job's Daughters, a member of Good Samaritan Shrine No. 17, Order of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, and of the First Methodist Church.
